about

'Unis par les ondes' is the motto of the Belgian Amateur Radio Society.

I was inspired to make these tracks after finding a set of amateur radio calling cards from the early 80s (I will post a video of them later) at a Brussels flea market.

A global subculture I knew very little about - thousands of people running makeshift stations, broadcasting their thoughts and music from their bedrooms, living rooms and garages - with their codes, their equipment and their circles.

I found it an interesting parallel with many other subcultures, including 'experimental music' both as a scene and as a movement.

Fittingly, the starting point of this work is the crackling of electronic test equipment, reworked.

Ayn Il Widen (or Għajn il-Widen) means 'the ear's eye' and 'the ear's source' in Maltese and Maghrebi Arabic.
