Ayn Il Widen (or Għajn il-Widen) is Kurt Buttigieg and Carla Said. Originally from Malta but now based in Brussels, Belgium

This album was composed in 2019 and revisited it during the Covid-19 lockdown, as things like day jobs, trousers and personal hygiene became increasingly distant memories. It is built around field recordings but put together in a period of confinement, location-based but home-bound.

Over the years we took recordings of places, things and moments. They are played unprocessed, processed or very processed to the point that they are used as instruments. These come from sources as disparate as a dormant volcano outside Olot, Catalonia to a hawker centre in Singapore. Melodies and rhythms are introduced, sometimes disappearing as quickly as they appear.

The sounds are edited using digital and analog techniques with no distinction or hierarchy between them.

Ayn il Widen / Għajn il-Widen

Kurt Buttigieg and Carla Said. From Malta, based in Belgium.

Making "nervous, pulsing ambient" and joyous musique concrète with field recordings, voice, amplified objects, microcassettes, pitch-shifted vinyl, electronics, computer and no computer.

Ayn Il Widen (or Għajn il-Widen) means 'the ear's eye' and 'the ear's source' in Maltese and Maghrebi Arabic.
